This is quickly becoming a conversation for the discussion thread, but there's a few reasons.
There's a lot of limitations with being an 8chan board owner, because you're not really an admin, and thus can't really run and monitor your board properly, putting you at the mercy of the global admins, who have frankly been either unhelpful, or incredibly lazy in their responses. The moderation on 8chan in general has also shown itself to be incredibly inconsistent, inexperienced, and in some cases, hypocritical. Another, related, reason is that the board is a fairly small board among a large list of boards, so why WOULD the global admins care? I wouldn't expect them to, and I probably wouldn't, if I were in their shoes.
On our own board, we could add custom things like a better oekaki function (8chan's isn't great), or anything else we'd want.
A much more minor reason at the moment, is to allow us to separate thread topics, if the need arises, for the sake of organisation.
But really, there's no reason to be on 8chan. The board format is available if we want to use the same format, so we have nothing to lose, and everything to gain by having our own board.
